Pogue Creek Canyon state park is a short drive north of the intersection of 154 and 297 NE of Jamestown, TN, a few miles from Tanglewood.
To hike the area, park in the lot off 154. You’ll see signs for the, “Astronomy field”.

This is a mild hike to a spectacular overlook, with an option from there for a steeper-down-and-up hike into the canyon.

Trail Maps

Walk west from the lot down a grass path and you’ll hit a trail that will take you into the woods.

Overlook

The path is mild out to an overlook near 1 mile distant. There’s not much up-and-down as you are staying atop the plateau out to the overlook.

Into the Canyon

Walking back from the overlook a short distance you’ll see a trail that heads down. If memory serves, there’s a sign indicating it takes you to Black Mountain Road.

This trail takes you down into the canyon, and if you take it all the way to Black Mountain Road it means you’ll climb up out of the canyon. I’ve not hiked all the way to the road.

Not far from the overlook you’ll descend a short but steep ladder-like set of stairs before the trail wraps around to a rock house that was beneath you when you were atop the overlook.

Creek Bottom

After a number of switchbacks past rock features you’ll reach the creek bottom where the water flows over rock shelves. If you continue up the other side you will pass the cliff you saw across to the west from the overlook.
